The hull and deck are constructed of vacuum-bagged unidirectional and biaxial E-glass/carbon/epoxy/balsa/PVC foam laminates, post-cured for maximum strength and stiffness. The carbon is used locally to stiffen the hull and deck because of the high keel, mast and chainplate loads. The hull laminate schedule complies with the IMS skin requirements. The combination of the thicker than normal hull core, along with material and density variations to suit local loads, allows a minimal framing system. The internal structural system is a one-piece moulded composite E-glass/carbon-capped/epoxy/foam frame, floor, bunk front structural unit that is bonded and tabbed to the hull. In short, the use of quality construction materials and techniques delivers a stiff, light and low-maintenance yacht. HULL & DECK On deck the attractive coachroof is complemented by a large, shallow dinghy-style racing cockpit that provides an excellent working platform. The jib in-haulers can narrow the sheeting angle. The deck utilizes a six-winch layout. Mainsheet winches are used instead of a tackle system for ease of handling the large mainsail. Traveler controls are led through the cockpit and forward to the hydraulics and engine control panel by the mainsail trimmer's position. Under deck tackles contribute to the very clean deck layout. The tiller is located well forward to ease communication between the helmsman and trimmers, which also keeps weight out of the stern. In addition to being a great cockpit for serious racing, the aft deck is also a great area to pile on a couple extra crew for beer can sailing. The lack of any backstay and runner clutter definitely helps the impression of a bigger boat. The appendages are deep and of high aspect ratio for close-winded upwind performance and minimum drag off the wind. The keel is a low center-of-gravity steel fin/lead bulb appendage whose generous depth was set to keep the boat's vertical trailer clearance to the US limit of 13'6". The rudder shaft and blade are carbon for maximum stiffness with minimum thickness to reduce drag and maximize responsiveness. Optimizations to Deck and Hull: The boat has been extensively Optimized and upgrade over the years. The boats exterior was painted with Awlgrip (Matterhorn white hull, light gray deck)The boats interior was also repainted with Awlgrip. Two black boot stripes were also painted above the water line. The bottom has been faired and painted with Vivid White with graphite racing powder. All deck hardware was removed prior to paint, and ALL thru deck fasteners were sleeved with G10 fiberglass tubing to eliminate deck compression. G10 backing plates were added to all high load hardware.A custom pig snout carbon fiber sprit was fabricated and installed by Fitzgerald Racing. The mast and boom were painted with Awlgrip (gloss black), and the engine exhaust was extended beyond the transom with fiberglass tubing. Both the forward Bomar hatch and the Lewmar cockpit hatches were replaced. STEERING A custom "wide yoke" stainless steel tubing tiller is included along with the stock stainless tiller. Both tillers utilize a common Spinlock tiller extension, and common attachments to a Simrad TP22 tiller pilot. A quick connect 12V plug was incorporated into the cockpit pod to connect to the tiller pilot. The outboard end of the tiller pilot is attached to a custom billet aluminum mounting thru bolted on the cockpit floor. RIG One of the biggest areas of innovation on the 1D35 is the rig. The rig is simple, yet high performance and easy to handle and control. The rig is a variable sweep-back, no backstay carbon rig with an adjustable hydraulic headstay. In designing the rig, Hall Spars used their spar Finite Element Analysis program to refine the geometry and optimize the stiffness of the mast tube and strength of the rigging so the rig performs as desired across the spectrum of sailing conditions. The simple and controllable design has the following attributes: Rig easily tensioned by adjusting headstay, with no mast jack needed Mainsail roach does not snag and cause sail wear, as there is no backstay Headstay tension is easily adjusted while sailing with hydraulics Headstay tension does not need to be altered when sailing downwind - especially welcome at the leeward mark These features, along with the 110% overlapping jibs simplify sail handling. The stock Hall Spars spinnaker halyard “spectacles” were removed, and a custom Hall Spars chafe guard was incorporated outside the stock halyard exits on the mast. This was done to increase the luff length of the Ayso spinnakers. ELECTRICAL A Garmin 3210 GPS chart plotter was installed in a custom hinged carbon fiber instrument panel located in navigation station. A Sony stereo was also added. Dedicated starting battery and "smart" battery switch, in addition to the house battery. The boat is equipped with Integrated Raymarine wireless TackTic sailing instruments. 3 mast mounted displays and 2 cockpit displays.A Blue Sea 12V distribution panel was also added and all wiring was replaced.Running lights are LED. INTERIOR The galley is forward, creating maximum volume and a feeling of spaciousness in the sitting areas. Forward of the mast the yacht is empty aside from minimal structure and a head/holding tank to starboard. Abreast of the mast to port is a molded food storage module with an L-shaped galley module to starboard including a custom (2) burner butane stove. Beneath the customized (3) step aluminum companionway ladder is an ice chest. All (4) fixed settee and quarter berths include green Sunbrella covered foam cushions. The (2) forward berths are equipped with lee cloths for offshore racing. Also included is a starboard side hinged pipe berth including large storage bags sewn on the underside. Red/white LED lighting is installed throughout. PLUMBING The boat includes a bronze, heavy-duty marine toilet. Privacy curtain surrounds head Also installed are above and below deck 12V automatic and (2) manual bilge pumps for Cat 1 offshore racing compliance. All flush thru hull fittings are equipped with wood plugs. 20 us gal water bladder under starboard side settee. The prod is used as a tack point for the Code 0 and Ayso spinnakers. Tack lines run down both sides of cabin top to Spinlock rope clutches. All stock thru bolt stanchion bases were replaced with G10 fiberglass sockets laminated to the boat’s interior. Forward stanchions include custom integrated sail rollers. The bow pulpit was modified in a scoop style. The stern push-pit was modified to allow hidden cable access thru deck and an LED transom light. A Lewmar engine throttle and shifter control was run into the cockpit pod as well as engine on/off control. A quick connect remote ICOM VHF hand held unit was also wired into the cockpit pod. The stock (2) step companionway ladder was modified to add a 3rd aluminum step still leaving space below the step for an easily accessible ice chest. Custom sheet bags were added to the cockpit, as well as on either side of the companionway for halyard and misc. storage. Removeable Sunbrella black out curtains were made for the companionway. All running rigging has been constantly upgraded. All standing rod rigging has been replaced. Harken 44 ST primary winches replaced cockpit primaries. A custom carbon companionway hatch board, and storage cover, was made.
